People have spent a good deal of effort on domestic animal improvement: makes them more successful as domestic species, more product, different product, provides service, better production/performance. Major areas of selection for improved specialized function: 20 species are of greatest importance in agriculture. These include four species of birds plus 16 mammalian species of which 7 are ruminants. 3 most widespread cattle, sheep, goats. Until very recently, greater than 2/3 of the large farm animals are found in developing countries, but they produce only about 1/3 each of the meat, milk, and wool produced in the world. Generally accepted uses for animals: food, clothing, transportation. In developed agriculture animals are usually kept on a given unit to produce primarily one product. The way animals are used, and degree to which they are utilized, depends on a regions level of agricultural development. As development increases so does the selling/thoughts of profit making.
