Document Summary
Evaluation and treatment of disorders related to articulation. Correct articulation is basis of intelligible speech. Intelligibility ease with which a listener is able to understand a speaker: degree of precision of articulation, rate of speech, length of utterance, familiarity/predictability of words used, listener"s experience with speaker"s speech patterns, voice characteristics. Poor intelligibility = communicative breakdowns: socially, professionally, educationally harmful. Major goal of articulation treatment is to improve intelligibility. Some are simple and some are more detailed. Perceptually measured by: scaling procedures listeners rate overall intelligibility of speaker, identification tasks listeners transcribe words or sentences said by speaker. Ask a listener to transcribe what they hear from the speaker. This is a little more difficult to do. Used to evaluate intelligibility and document any intelligibility changes over time. These are only perceptual measures: do not provide info about articulators, movement, etc.
