It is important to learn reading strategies and skills when learning a new language. Reading is a great way to teach oneself a language and build vocabulary in addition to learning sentence construction, how to frame questions, understanding context and meaning, furthering knowledge in grammar and spelling. This learning through reading spills over into the other aspects of language too, such as speaking, listening, and writing. Reading can further one"s skills in the other forms of language. To understand what one is reading, it is necessary to develop reading strategies to help decode meaning. There are a wide number of strategies used in reading, such as metacognition, key words, summarizing, searching for the main idea. That is only a very small number of reading strategies i mentioned, but there are many more out there. It is important to read strategically because practicing strategies leads to honing reading skills.
