Stages of Birth (3 stages)
1st stage uterine contractions are 15 to 20 minutes apart and last up to 1 minute
o Dilation opening
o Effacement thinning
o Can take several hours, especially with the first birth
2nd stage begins when the baby’s head starts to move through the cervix and birth
canal and ends when the baby completely emerges from the mother’s body
o brings on the natural urge to squeeze and push with abdominal muscles and
the strong urge to squeeze and push with abdominal muscles and the strong
contractions
3rd stage afterbirth when the placenta, umbilical cord, and other membranes are
detached and expelled.
o Usually only lasts a few minutes

Methods of childbirth
o Medication analgesia, anesthesia, and oxytocin
o Roughly 80% of U.S. childbirths use some form of medication
o When a medication is chosen for labor and childbirth, the woman should
consider her level of pain threshold as well as other factors since there are
choices. Analgesics can help a mother relax, while anesthesia is a stronger
painkiller that blocks sensations. Each of these should be discussed with the
medical team.
