Document Summary

Describe plant developmental stages and associated structures and processes. Plant growth: permanent increase in cell size or number. How does a plant grow: increase size, increase in cell number, increase in cell size and cell number. Vacuole is the key to cell expansion: make up to 90% of plant cell volume, contains water, sugars, enzymes, plant defense compounds, waste products, etc. Created as the vacuole takes in solutes and water. If plant wilts, not enough water to push against the cell. Cell division (mitosis) occurs in the meristem. Areas in the plant where cells are dividing and enlarging rapidly, resulting in plant growth. Undifferentiated tissue whose cells can divide and differentiate to form specialized tissues. Biomass: organic matter produced in a given location at a given time. Mass of available forage in a pasture at a given day. Yield: marketable biomass per unit area during a growing season.
