First, the root-meaning of islam is to enter into peace: a muslim is one who makes peace with god and man. The basic doctrines of islam concern the unity of god and the unity of man: peace with god involved complete submission to god"s will. Islam is a religion that does not advocate dogma (that which is to be believed because it has come from authority) Rather the principles of islam are known through our experience of humanity and the world. We are told that we can attest to the truth of islam in our own hearts. The shahadah: creed, there is no god but god, and muhammad is his prophet . Sincere repetition of the creed before other muslims is all that is required to enter the faith: allah. The personal and proper name for god. This name comprises all of the other divine attributes. God is absolutely transcendent- beyond out comprehension.
