Meaning/ classification continually produced, reproduced, and/or altered in collective processes of ritualization and symbolization. Each element of religion revolves around the sacred. Communal function of religion: dual processes of ritualization and symbolization. Ritual- highly routinized act, patterned sequence of behavior. Ritual ingredients: require group assembly/bodily co-presence, barriers to outsiders, mutual focus of attention, shared mood. Ritual outcomes: group solidarity, emotional energy in individual, symbols of social relationship/shared objects, standards of morality.
