Rise of the modern state, late 15th century (1400s) 16th century (1500s) Dynasties: tudor (england), valois (france), & habsburg (holy roman empire) Starts to change in the second half of the 15th century: start to get strong rulers who will consolidate power, monarchy, several generations of strong state. Consolidation and expansion of power: e. g. , isabella and ferdinand of spain. Will unite spain under this marriage: united in policy. Will marry their children off also: one daughter to portugal, one to henry 8th, one ( juana) into the habsburg family. Try to suppress the independent power of the nobles. Gets control of the military: one national army that will be loyal to the monarchy. Tug of war between the catholic church and political rule. Stronger monarch will take power away from church.
