During previous eras, children were considered miniature adults. Today, children are considered unique stage of development. Sexuality in children is not the same as adulthood (children do experience sexual development. Physical development: fully equipped at birth, some sexual anatomy functional before birth, male fetuses with erections. At birth: erections, female infants capable of vaginal lubrication. Gender identity is between 1 and 2. Most develop gender constancy by age 6. Realization that one"s gender usually does not change. Psychosexual development: bonding and gender importance of attachment. Body makes sure that all physical systems work and are developing properly (true for reproductive system as well. No differentiation between sexual and other bodily functions. Gender identification becomes fundamental part of self-concept. What it means to be a girl or a boy (exploration of body) Curiosity and responsibility: not yet aware of sexuality or genital sexual relations. Engage in bodily exploration: enjoy pleasurable sensations.
