France were particularly attached to the great lakes area, where their main interest was the lucrative fur trade business. French in america were forced by necessity to foster warm relations with the indian population. Since so few french women came to america, frenchmen inevitably married native women, further strengthening the ties between native tribes and newcomers. The dutch were mostly interested in expanding their empire via trade. The dutch empire, however, went down in flames rather quickly when the english were at war with the netherlands back in europe. The english moved in and took over the new netherland colony in 1664 without firing a shot. That ended dutch involvement in the area that is now north america. Gold in africa started the explorations with new technology: Slavery was already in africa before the europeans came. They traded textiles (clothes) and guns for slaves. Vasco da gama sailed to india by 1498 after portugal set up a vast trade empire.
