Conducting Psychological Research:
Research: systematic inquiry aimed at the discovery of new knowledge.
o Research of different psychologists is designed w/ different goals which
require different approaches.
Research Design: specific methods researcher uses to collect,
analyze, & interpret data.
Psychologists use 3 major types of research designs in their
research.
A. Descriptive: observes specific behaviors & records the
observation.
Goal: observe & record specific behaviors.
Advantages:
Provides relatively complete pic of what’s occurring at
given time.
Allows development of questions for further study.
Disadvantages:
Doesn’t assess relationships among variables.
Can be unethical if participants don’t know they’re
being observed.
B. Correlational: designed to discover relationships among
variables & allow prediction of future events from present
knowledge.
Goal: assess relationships between & among 2 or more
variables.
Advantages:
Allows testing of expected relationships between &
among variables & making of predictions.
Can assess relationships in everyday life events.
