PSY 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Research: systematic inquiry aimed at the discovery of new knowledge: research of different psychologists is designed w/ different goals which require different approaches, research design: specific methods researcher uses to collect, analyze, & interpret data. Psychologists use 3 major types of research designs in their research: descriptive: observes specific behaviors & records the observation. Allows development of questions for further study. Provides relatively complete pic of what"s occurring at. Can be unethical if participants don"t know they"re. Disadvantages: being observed: correlational: designed to discover relationships among variables & allow prediction of future events from present knowledge. Goal: assess relationships between & among 2 or more variables. Allows testing of expected relationships between & among variables & making of predictions. Can assess relationships in everyday life events. Goal: assess causal impact of 1 or more experimental manipulations on a dependent variable. Allows drawing of conclusions about causal relationships among variables. Can"t experimentally manipulate a lot of important variables.
