RES 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Nonviolence
Document Summary
Jainism is one of the four major religions which come out of india, along with hinduism, There are approximately 6 million jains living in the world. Jainism and buddhism are contemporaneous (existed/founded at the same time) due to the founder of jainism, mahavira, being contemporary of the buddha. Jainism believes in having a soul, but it does not have a god. When you perform an action, or do something which is bad, jains see your soul as sticky and this stickiness results in being rebirthed at a much lower estate. For example, you might be rebirthed in the area in the sky of the hellish beings rather than the area of heavenly beings. Due to this, jains refrain from being violent (nonviolence is taken very seriously) and are probably one of the most non-violent people in the world. India look at jains as the best example as to how to live a non-violent life.
