• Review of White Privilege:
➢ The collection of unearned cultural, political, economic, & social advantages
& privileges possessed by people of Anglo-European decent or by those who
pass as such.
➢ Since many white people go about their lives w/out feeling weight of race on
their shoulders, they sometimes are reluctant to see how race may still be an
issue in the U.S.
➢ In housing:
o Even after adjusting for income & occupation, whites are far less likely to
be exposed to toxic chemicals & pollutants than are Latinos or African
Americans.
o White neighborhoods are far less likely to house institutions of pollution.
▪ Garbage dumps
▪ Trash incinerators
▪ Chemical plants
➢ In the criminal justice system:
o Although most drug addicts are white, African Americans are 4x more
likely to be arrested on drug charges than whites.
o In federal prison system, whites enjoy sentences that are on average 20%
shorter than those given to African Americans guilty of the exact same
crime.
➢ If white people benefit from skin privilege, POCs are disadvantaged by it.
o Can’t talk about black poverty w/out talking about white affluence.
o Can’t talk about Hispanic unemployment w/out talking about white
employment.
• Race is a Social Reality:
➢ Symbolic Category:
