Need to consider crime rates, rather than number of offences (population increases means crime will increase too) Australia was a less violent society at the end of the 20th century than it was at the end of the 19th or 18th centuries " (graycar & grabosky, 2002) Violent crime accounts for approximately 20% of reported crime in australia. The most serious violent crime murder accounts for a very small proportion of reported crime.
