Ex: shark vs. dolphin : coloration, fins, evolved from a mammal, pakicetus. Great auk penguin from arctic, and emperor penguin from antartica you jtaxonomy: field that establishes the rules of classification. Organisms are classified first on the basics of similar traits. Basic similarities must reflect evolutionary descent in order for them to be useful. Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. There are other species of the genus homo. Ex: chimps are members of the genus pan (chimps and bonobos) When reconstructing evolutionary relationships biologists look for homologous traits (not analogous traits) Homologous traits can be: either or: ancestral: inherited from an earlier form, traits has not changed from ancestral state. Not diagnostic: derived: has changed from the ancestral state; evolutionary novelty, more recently evolved. Our foot morphology has changed due to us walking most of the time, which makes us different than chimps and apes. Modified to suit the condition or environment they are in.
