ANTH 002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Beringia, Arctic Circle, Clovis Culture
Document Summary
Dry-land connected between asia and north america. During interglacial periods, ice melts and path is obstructed. Water locked up in glacial ice sheets reduced worldwide sea levels by 300-400 feet water is locked up therefore created these. Treeless plains characterized by permafrost conditions and supported growth of shallow-rooted vegetation such as grasses and mosses. Dry treeless plains characterized by temperature extremes. Located north of arctic circle in siberia. Found artifacts including tools made of rhinoceros horn and mammoth tusk, and hundreds of stone artifacts. Important site because it demonstrates that humans had adapted to a harsh arctic environments very early. Originating in the mountains of western north america. Centered in the hudson bay region and extending across much of the eastern canada and the northern united states. During much of pleistocene, the cordilleran and laurentide ice sheets were connected. Geology indicates a corridor opened between them around 13,700-13,400 years ago. Would have permitted human and animal migrations.
