REL119 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Islamic Culture, Ummah
Document Summary
While islam has this all-encompassing definition of religion. Differentiates religion"s injunctions/teachings into what concerns private life and what relates to the public domain, even if these two aspects are not seen as fully separate. The private aspects deal mainly with all that affects men"s and women"s inner relationship with god. The other main rituals, including fasting and pilgrimage, which will all be dealt with later, also refer to the private aspects of life. But these rites often have a strong public dimension, as do the canonical prayers that are sometimes performed with other muslims in the group. The canonical prayers can, of course, often be performed alone and in private except for friday"s congregational prayers, which obviously include the public, small or large in number. Islam also lays down the concepts of human behavior, as they apply to private life. First, the care of a human being"s own body by the divine law (alshar "ah) is regulated.
