Alcohol: in western countries over 75 percent of men and 50 percent of women consume more than an occasional alcoholic beverage. Among teenagers and young adults between the ages of 16 and 25 the highest percentages of drinkers and alcohol consumption are noted. There is a decline in age after age 25. About 25% and 50% of young men experience temporary alcohol-related problems such as arguments with peers, loss of work time, and drunk-driving arrests; most never go beyond this point. 20s to early 30s, while problem drinkers sustain or increase their use of alcohol. 5 to 10 percent of adult males in the u. s. would meet the alcohol dependency requirements over a lifetime. 17 percent if the less serious addiction requirements are used. Highest levels of alcohol dependency are seen in men between the ages of 30 and. Rates are increasing as wages, employment and ses decline. High consumption among catholics (notably french and irish) is noted.
