Excretion: removal of organic wastes from body fluids. Elimination: discharge of waste products into the environment. Homeostatic regulation: of blood plasma volume and solute concentration. Capped on superior surface by suprarenal (adrenal) glands. Perinephric fat capsule: adipose tissue, surrounds and protects the kidneys. Renal fascia: dense, fibrous outer layer, anchors kidneys to surrounding structures. Renal columns: bands of cortical tissue extend into medulla. Renal lobe: contains pyramid, cortex and renal column, site of urine production. Urine production starts in cortex and leaves via papilla. To afferent arterioles: deliver blood to capillaries supplying site of filtration. Tube like structures located in cortex and medulla. Blood pressure forces water and solutes out of glomerular capillaries and into capsule. Water and solutes removed from filtrate, important for water retention. Additional solutes removed from blood and enter renal tubule. Long loops of henle extended into medulla (deep) Ureters: muscular tubes extending from kidney to bladder.
