Taste buds: sensory organs for taste; most are located on papillae: projections of tongue mucosa. Gustatory cells: sensory cells that form taste buds. Cranial nerves vii and ix carry taste information back to the brain. In the embryo, the tongue develops from two structures that later fuse together. Because of this, the anterior and posterior parts of the tongue are innervated by different nerves. Auricle: cup-like projection, funnels sound waves into auditory canal. Auditory canal: short tube, external part is cartilage and the internal part is within the temporal bone. Middle ear: hollow, air-filled chamber within the temporal bone. Ossicles: three small bones of the middle ear (malleus, incus and stapes) There are two muscles in the middle ear.
