The Muscular System
Muscle fibers come in different forms
1) Slow oxidative fibers
o Very fatigue resistant
Endurance
o Rely on aerobic respiration to produce ATP
o Contain:
Lots of myoglobin
Lots of oxygen
o Have many mitochondria
o Contractions are not very strong
o Tend to be slower
2) Fast oxidative fibers
o Somewhat fatigue resistant
o Rely on aerobic respiration to produce ATP
o Contain lots of:
Myoglobin
Oxygen
o Have mitochondria
o Contractions are faster than slow oxidative fibers
3) Fast glycolytic fibers
o Fatigue easily
o Adapted for strength
o Do not contain much:
Myoglobin
Oxygen
o Rely mostly on anaerobic production of ATP
o Store extra carbohydrates as glycogen
o Contractions:
Rapid
Strong
Fast-twitch muscle fiber (white)
Anaerobic
Has explosive power
Fatigues easily
Slow-twitch muscle fiber (red)
Aerobic
Has steady power
Has endurance
