Document Summary

Documentary about her mother: trying to find her mother. Link between act of storytelling and creating a work of art. Why do people tell stories: how memory works, no one is a bad guy in his own story. Do we get sarah"s perspective: she decides where the narrative goes. She comes up with the questions: always off camera. If in the film, her voice would carry over everything else. Sarah asks everybody the same questions: tell the story from the beginning to the end. Everyone has a different beginning and end: constantly narrating our lives to ourselves. Polley talks how she discovered form for the film: memoir of her life, watched other documentaries. Found out what didn"t work for her: had to find her own voice and way of telling the story, dad"s writing became the spine of the film. He gets to begin and end the story: he has the most knowledge of the whole story.
