Society is made up of diverse social groups. Diversity is based on distinctions that people believe to be significant. Each group holds differing definitions of right and wrong: moral concepts vary across groups. The fundamental nature of group conflict centers on the exercise of political power enough to make it. Law is a tool of power and furthers the interests of those powerful. Those in power are inevitably interested in maintaining their power against those who would seek to take it away from them: political power. States laws are a tool of power. Emphasis on social class (more than race) The man keeping the powerless down: social class- distinction made between individuals on basis of important social characteristics. Ascribed characteristics- those we are born with. Someone poor who works their way up to wealth. Best know to early writer on issues of social conflict. Two fundamental social classes exist: bourgeoisie- upper class, people in power, proletariat- working class.
