Pirate positions everyone who was a part of the crew would be the pirates . The crew hardy seamen who worked together. Crewmen had a stake in the success of the ship. If you steal from someone on the ship, you get marooned. If two pirates fight, they have to go to the mainland for a while and if they still hate each other, they have to have a duel. The winner gets to go back on the ship and the loser doesn"t. If you got severely injured (lose an arm or leg), they paid you for your injuries but then you got kicked off the crew. Important ships (carrying expensive goods) had escorts.
