EDPSY 014 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Cognitive Load, Overlearning
Document Summary
When to reteach: when there is lots of errors- high percent, during guided practice. In more traditional types of instruction, there is less guided practice and teachers tend to call on the high ability students. Teaches all week, gives test at the end of the week- majority of the students fail: waste another week re-teaching, just go on. Both of these choices are bad, by using guided practice methods daily, we can avoid this scenario much closer monoriting. Every time students open their mouth, it is a mini test you can monitor what is going on. Classwork where the teacher doesn"t guide or listen to every answer. When they are really mastering the content: 70% accuracy or above in guided practice, 80% with low ability students. Higher ability students can handle the frustration of being wrong. Lower ability students get frustrated easily and may want to give up. We are not doing enough guided practice in schools.
