Need to avoid failure- find ways to avoid things. Trait vs. state: trait- internal, fairly stable. Starts from your childhood when parents are supportive. Let your child make their own decisions a progression over time. When a child is 6 years old, let them make their own sandwich. Develops more need to achieve: state- more situational. Learning goals (mastery goals: motivated to learn content, primarily intrinsic. When you learn things that are important or meaningful to you, the retention of that material will be longer: example- running for fun. Performance goals: motivated to look good compared to others, primarily extrinsic. Sports: example- running competitively, ex 2- driven to get the grade on the test. Retention of information long-term is low: not the kind of goal we want to have promoted in classrooms. Social goals: motivated to gain status in the peer group (social acceptance, ex- participation in thon, ex 2- girls in middle school, anti-math/science, can be bad.
