In the end, she hears the movement in the basement as someone levels, she herself leaves, only to find that he is the taxi driver who kidnaps her upon entering. Uncertainty plays a large role, classic modernist move. The thing is, k. is her own initial for kathleen. She mentions the cracks as being unable to be mended. She feels the welt left by her lover"s uniform.
