Establishment: options: building credentials related one specific career or career field. Maintenance: continuing education and professional development within a career field. Advancing career options with a certain career field. Disengagement: shifting from work to retirement. Converting energy and interests that were applied to work. Now into new areas of engagement in life: student, daughter/son, sibling, parent, partner (spouse, volunteer, worker, citizen, community member. Lent, brown, and hackett"s social cognitive career theory. Beliefs about career and possible career options are shaped/reinforced by: the role models in one"s life, the level of reinforcement one has had. Examples: school, work, art, music, athletics, etc. Example: curious about writing, so one writes a short story. Share it with family and friends who encourage to submit the story to a contest. Decide to attend a summer writing program.
