Whether it is a: single-parent family, low socioeconomic status. Good parenting is a mediating variable: erases the negative circumstances, harder when parent is depressed, etc. , but: Specificity principle: specific parental behaviors at specific times shape specific infant behaviors in specific ways. Experiences with parents in a reciprocal manner. V represents boundaries: parents are in control, parents are at the top of the v, children at the bottom. Parents are sometimes inconsistent in the boundaries they give to their child: an opposite v (write an upside down v) Unhealthy: when parents start off narrow in infancy and gradually get wider (more boundaries) We want kids to be independent so soon: upside down v. Attachments: other care figures as well. Siblings: being an only child, having a sister, having a brother, being the youngest sibling, being the oldest sibling. Peers that we: choose, do not choose. Culture influences parental beliefs about: childrearing, development. Co-sleeping beliefs/values: parents" beliefs about childrearing determine parental behavior.
