Document Summary

Rene descartes claims that all he has accepted and knows to be true is actually a series of misconceptions and false opinions. He argues that in order to fee his mind of these falsehoods that he must overthrow his former opinions. He also argues that if it is possible to find even the slightest doubt behind his current beliefs that it is necessary to seek out more reasonable and grounded foundations of knowledge. Descartes believes that all that he has learned to be true this far has come through sensual experiences despite the fact that senses could sometimes be misleading as well. Finally, descartes claims that all that he dreams about must be constructed from waking experiences. He argues that while aspects may be dreamt into created, the basic foundations of the objects come from universally accepted concepts (such as shapes, colors and sizes).
