BRAIN STRUCTURE FUNCTION The Brain Stem Medulla • Non­conscious bodily functions, reflexes, breathing,  blood pressure • Located at the base of the brain stem • Vital functions such as breathing, swallowing and  heart rate Pons • Important for states of consciousness as well as a  highway for sensory and motor information • Has a lot of nerve fibers running through it Cerebellum • The “little brain” attached to the rear of the brain  stem • Helps continue voluntary movement including  balance, accuracy, and timing of movement • Example: when someone is drinking they lose their  balance, it effects their cerebellum Subcortical Forebrain Thalamus • Main relay station for majority of sensory  information Hypothalamus • Plays a crucial center for modulating and regulating a  large number of behaviors, like eating, thirst, sex, and  sleeping Hippocampus • Memory: forms new memories • Damage results in failure to form new memories • Famous case of H.M. (seizures removed from area of  the brain, loses his memory) Amygdala • Associated with negative emotions such
