Trauma: event of extreme distress that invokes remarkable danger and/or horror. Acute stress disorder (asd): severe negative aftereffects within a month of trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd): sever negative aftereffects longer than a month after a trauma. Traumatic stress: any event that involves actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. According to the dsm, may be experienced by: Learning it occurred to close others repeated/extreme exposure to details of trauma. Re-experiencing: recurrent experiences reminiscent of the trauma (1) recurrent, intrusive memories of the event (2) repeated distressing dreams (3) flashbacks: suddenly replaying the trauma in images or thoughts. Re-experiencing the trauma as though it were actually happening. Can occur in a dissociative state: loss of awareness of the true, surrounding reality. Avoidance: persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma (1) avoidance of distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings related to the event (2) avoidance of external reminders that arouse distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings related to event.
