Document Summary
Anorexia nervosa: extreme food restriction largely due to fear of gaining weight. Bulimia nervosa: recurrent periods of excessive eating and ways to compensate. Vomiting, taking care of the calories w/o removing the food, etc. Binge eating disorder: excessive, uncontrolled eating without compensating for intake. 5-17% of those with anorexia die from the illness. Extreme malnutrition (starving oneself, over of deaths) Fear that relaxing control over food will lead to uncontrolled overeating. Losing weight does not meaningfully decrease fear. Experience themselves as larger than they really are. Often deny their low weight is a problem. Feelings, thoughts, or beliefs are viewed as unwanted and undesirable. Symptoms are acceptable and welcomed by the client. Egosyntonic disorders are very hard to treat, because the client actually values them. Depressive: sadness, irritability, withdrawal, and low sex drive. May be cause or effect of disorder. Lanugo: fine downy hair on face or torso (developed for warmth) Excessively focused on staying in control and conforming.
