After several trials, people can get a feeling for their opponents motives. When both have honest intentions, they will learn this strategy. They often don"t work when both parties are free to threaten each other. Hurting the other person is more important to people than their own personal gain. Ex: have 2 friends bid on a dollar bill, they will both keep increasing then you will get more.
