Where did the Director come from?
Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen
o Very passionate about theatre
o 1866 he came to power and wanted to improve the theatre
o Formed the Meiningen Players (formerly known as the court theatre) and
established four practices that shaped modern theatre:
1. Play-specific costumes, sets, and props
2. Abolished the star system embraced ensemble
3. Rehearse as long as necessary
4. Unified Production Concept Director is in charge of and responsible for
everything both rewarding and difficult!
o Model of the traditional director
Serving the script, but not subservient to it
Realize the playwright’s vision while becoming chief storyteller
Seeks best way for the audience to experience the script as written
