Document Summary

Chapter 1: biology and the tree of life. Theory: an explanation for a very general class of phenomena or observations that are supported by a wide body of evidence (more global). Consists of two components: a pattern in the natural world and process that is responsible for this pattern (broad) Hypothesis: a testable statement to explain observations (precise) Prediction: a measurable result that must be correct if a hypothesis is valid. Cells are produced only when preexisting cells grow and divide. He tested to see if there was growth in both flasks (proving spontaneous growth) or growth in only the straight-neck flask (proving cell from cell theory). The only difference between the two groups was the (cid:271)roth"s exposure to preexisti(cid:374)g cells. He rejected spontaneous generation, proving that cells arise from preexisting cells: pasteur had such conclusive results that most biologists concluded the all-cells-from-cells hypothesis was correct.
