Protection o Against other life forms They want our resources o For their own cell respiration, fermentation First line of defense ~ saliva ~ As a kid tendency to do this when you cut your finger o Lysozyme in saliva and tears o Breaks down bacterial cell wall First line of defense ~ stomach acid ~ Swallowed bacteria broken down by strong acids in the stomach Natural killer cells for second line of defense Perforin perforates target cell o Store granules in natural killer cells releases granzymes o Creates holes in cell membrane (constructed by little barrelshape forming rods) Hematopoietic stem cell blood forming cell Can change into a type of blood cell depending on exposure to chemicals Chemicals Interferon Complement Interferon o Interferes with viruses infected cells secrete interferon to attract macrophages NKCs o Blocks viral replication in other cells Complement o Similar to perforin, forms barrellike channels is a collection of proteins in the blood stream that respond to injury o Circulate in the inactive form o Bind to cell surfaces to activate, but are inactivated by native cells, not foreign cells Inflammatory Response second line of defense (at site of wound) Flush out opening debris Attract cells to kill invader o Endocytosis phagocytosis (different mechanisms) Seal up wound Provide information for acquired immune response Latin phrase calor, dolor, rubor et tumor (heat, pain, redness swelling) Heat o Warm cord blood moves to wound area
