Document Summary

*heart pumps a billion times during a lifetime! *heart is in thoracic cavity, encased in a bag of connective tissue called the pericardium. *pericardial fluid inside pericardium cushions & lubricates the heart. Heart is mostly muscle (myocardium) with chambers lined with epithelium. Thick wall of left ventricle = ventricular myocardium (a muscle) Left wall thicker than right wall b/c left ventricle does more work to generate more force. Needs to generate more force/pressure since there is greater resistance with longer vessels. Papillary muscles: fibers connected to valves; hold the leaves in place so (cid:448)al(cid:448)es (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t push ope(cid:374) too much. If valve pushed open too far, and pressure is greater in front of valve, valves would open even further & not be able to close. Cardiac muscle: striated, unlike skeletal, they are single (unfused) cells surrounded by cell membrane, cardiac muscle cells are connected to each other at their ends by intercalated disks.
