ENGFLM 0530 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Film Studies, Post-Structuralism
Document Summary
Film ch 5 notes: spectator, audience, and response: Spectatorship deals with how people are situated between screen and projector in a dark space. We have higher expectations and investment b/c we paid for the experience. Theater is both more public and more private than home tv. We have no control over pausing film, what it will be, how loud it is. The audience ceases to exist for the individual during the film. Having fellow audience hypes up the experience, chit chat before the movie, infectious laughter, screaming all at once etc. We are subject to marketing and aims of people making film and commercials. We become part of the network of people who have now seen the movie, discuss it out in the world. Although the spectator is an individual, spectatorship generalizes how all spectators behave. We don"t care about an individual"s subjective experience of the film.
