Genre studies the rule based nature of cinema as a mass entertainment medium, setting a. Now hollywood is organized almost entirely by genre. Genres as taxonomy: grouping based on similarities of form or content. Two elements: finding common characteristics by which to group, and distinguishing them from other groupings. Break down cinema into smaller more managebale groups for in depth study. with so many commonalities as to justify a group, rather than each being unique. Overall genres: narrative film, experimental/a-vant gard, and documentary. So the genres we know of (thriller, romance, comedy) are actually subgenres. Two limiting, some sb genres don"t fit into any of the three overall.
