Stages of tech: invention, innovation, diffusion (widespread use), update (maintenance) During studio era, all factors of quality and sound could be meticulously controlled. After studio era fell apart, users complained about decreased quality. In 1970s, new technology made appearances in films like star wars and got massive ratings. Since then, tech has been a selling point and bonus features about the making of a film are additional profit. Tech companies and theaters/producers work together to test equipment, assign expenses, quality etc. Today: barco, christies digital system, and nec mainly produce the projectors. Thses companoes work with producers to avoid a chatic marketplace filled with multiple technologies. Digital cinema initiatives: released series of standards for cinemas, not required but encouraged to meet audience expectations. Also audience expects convergence between dialouge, editing, and other sounds. Necessiy as the mother of invention issue multiple channels for sound integration, animation depth, special fx, underwater footage.
