Week 9- measuring the mental and operationalism- thursday: operationalism. The history of psychology and many other sciences in the 20th century involved a shift from strict to heuristic. There were a number of reasons for this: In many non-physical sciences, it was never put into practice rigorously: strict operationalism leaves little room for convergence between measurements, triviality worries. Limits and prospects of operationism: there are several questions facing operational definition in contemporary science. How do we correct biases in specific techniques: helen longino. Intuitive description: different research programs use different means to measure the same thing. Insofar as they come to different conclusions, at least one research program is incorrect. Studies of aggression illustrate how distinct research programs can get mired in cross-talk. Approaches to aggression are beset by vagueness and imprecision in their definitions and disunity in their measurement strategies.
