Document Summary

Can be a psychological or physical challenge. Can be positive (adaptive) or negative (maladaptive) Can last a long time (main difference between stress and anxiety) Fear: emotional response to clear a current danger. Anxiety disorder: inappropriate, excessive, irrational anxiety that interferes with daily activity. Fear response: sensory input (you see the spider) 3: the cortex and amygdala share information. Hpa axis = hypothalamus, pituitary adrenal gland. The amygdala releases crf which causes the hypothalamus to release. The amygdala is not a part of the axis. Crf released from the amygdala to the brainstem causes ne release and sympathetic activation. Crf is released from the amygdala to the cortex. People with anxiety disorders have decreased gaba receptors. Antidepressants that increase seratonin sometime reduce symptoms of anxiety. Early life exposure to stress contributes to the development of anxiety disorders. Early stress alters the hpa axis, causing a hyperactive hormonal response to stress.
