Belongs to a family of drugs known as methylxanthines. Theophylline is found in tea (in addition to caffeine) Properties discovered between 12th and 15th centuries. Tea = caffeine + theophylline: made in the leaves, highest caffeine content is in the bud and the first two leaves closest to the bud, green tea, oolong tea, black tea. Cocoa = caffeine + theobromine: made from the seedpods of the cacao tree, native to amazon rain forest. Average american drinks 3. 1 cups of coffee each day. Administration: oral, transdermal (cosmetic products - vasoconstriction) Completely absorbed from stomach and small intestine: no significant first pass metabolism, eating before slows absorption. Eat blood levels occur within 15-120 mins. Metabolized in liver: slowed by alcohol, slowed during pregnancy. Increased by broccoli: two times increased in smokers, nicotine decreases half-life by up to 50% Not metabolized by infants (until ~8 months) Half-life = ~4 hours: has active metabolites, xanthines.
