Depression (7% of adults experience major depression each year) Women are 70% more likely to experience depression than men. Could be due to lack of self report. Reduced difference if you include rage/anger as a symptom. Women are more likely to be abused. Genetic predisposition: no single gene has been identified. Reserpine: treats high blood pressure: permanent vmat blocker, can only be reversed by making new vmat, long lasting, affects all monoamines (da, norepinephrine, serotonin, causes depression. Deficits in serotonin (mood), da (motivation, and ne (arousal) Depression is caused by not having enough monoamines. Also triggers neurogenesis in hippocampus (usually smaller in depressed people) Treats amotivation first (motivation to go do things) Autoreceptors cancel out he effect by not allowing more serotonin to enter the synapse.
