PHYS 0110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Circular Motion, Friction, Dimensionless Quantity
Document Summary
Soccer player"s shoes need to be rough enough for the player not to fall. Gymnast"s hands need to be rough enough to not slip off beam. Snake skin has to be smooth enough to crawl comfortably. Shoes slips backward (to take a step forward), frictional force exerted by the ground that acts forward; opp direction of slip attempt. Snake motion is to the right, frictional force exerted by the ground to the left (resists the sliding of the snake) If object is attempting to move: static friction. Ex) box on the ground at rest you are pushing it on a rough floor. Keep increasing applied force, but box does not slide. Seems that no matter how hard you push; box is not moving box is at rest and remains at rest, accel is zero. Accel is zero, so net force is zero. There is a force that is equal and opposite to applied push on a box.
