Document Summary

Trait theories: central feature of science is measurement. We know everyone by their personality traits, that"s how we id people and talk about them. Personality traits: consistent pattern in the way individuals behave, feel, and think over time and across situations. Consistency: a person shows that trait consistently over time and across situations. Distinctiveness: they display that trait as relative to other people. Ex: kind as compared to the average other people. Description: traits summarize a person"s typical behavior and thus describe what that person is typically like. Therefore this description is first basic step in understanding personality. But trait theorists try to establish overall descriptive scheme within which any and all persons can be described. Establish personality taxonomy (classification system) by characteristic, avg experience and actions. With these can predict how people with dif traits will vary in everyday behavior. Explanation: trait constructs could be used to explain behavior.
