Document Summary

Pages 62 74; 100-102: the plasma membrane: fig. Is a steroid and it is embedded in the phospholipid. Took a long time to figure out that there is a double layer of phospholipid. Before they thought it only had one layer. Triglyceride has three fatty acids and a glycerol molecule attached to all. Phospholipid is amphipathic as it has hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends (polar head a glycerol and 2 fatty acids) The polar head faces the extracellular fluid which is mostly water similar to the inside of the cell. There is also glycolipids which are sugar groups attached to lipids. Also have cholesterol which is a steroid that imbedded in between the phospholipids. The plasma membrane is moving all the time it is not a rigid structure. Fluidity of the plasma membrane depends on the amount of cholesterol in the membrane. More cholesterol the more rigid the plasma membrane. Then have proteins that are embedded in the membrane.
