Document Summary

Chm 115 - lecture 19 - types of bonds. Sigma bonds are bonds that result from end-to-end overlap of orbitals of different atoms. Have highest electron density along the axis of the bond. Ethane consists of one sp3-sp3 sigma bond between the two carbons and six s- sp3 sigma bonds between the carbons and hydrogens. Pi bonds are bonds that result from side-to-side overlap of orbitals of different atoms. Highest electron density occurs parallel to the axis of the bond. Pi bonds only occur in double and triple bonds. In a double bond, one bond is a sigma bond and the other is a pi bond. In a triple bond, one bond is a sigma bond and the other two are pi bonds. Pi bonds have two lobes, one above and one below the axis of the bond. Pi bonds are usually weaker than sigma bonds, since there is less overlap in the orbitals.
